PRESQUE ISLE, Mich. — A newly listed property in northern Michigan manages to strike the balance between fantasy and practicality.
The listing is for an entire 48-acre island, offering the get-away-from-it-all vibe that many folks dream about. Yet the island is on an inland lake just 20 miles (about a half-hour drive) north of Alpena, affording access to the kind of conveniences some of us might wish to have not too far away.
An open house for the island, named Brown Island, is scheduled for Oct. 13th. After that, on Oct. 30th, the property will go up for auction; the auction closes at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1st.
The starting bid is $250,000. Listing agency LastBidRealEstate.com is accepting pre-bids from now until the auction opens.

The island is situated in Presque Isle County on the 5,600-acre Grand Lake, which is about seven miles long. The historic New Presque Isle Light (automated and still operational) and Old Presque Isle Light (now a museum) are nearby attractions.

The island is about a quarter-mile from the mainland. The property listing includes 50 feet of shoreline on the mainland, providing a private access point for, say, launching or docking a boat.

The main structure on the island is a 3,000-square-foot lodge with a commercial-grade kitchen and seating for nearly three dozen people in the great room.

The listing notes that electricity is provided from the mainland via marine cable, while water is supplied by a deep-water well.

The previous owners used the island and lodge as a retreat center, but the two could easily be adapted for other purposes, said Jordan Miedema, president of LastBidRealEstate.com.
“I think it could be used a a corporate retreat, it could be used as a camp, or just a private getaway where you could be secluded from the world,” he said. “It’s a nice little oasis.”

In addition to the lodge, the island also has a 30’x40′ pole barn for storage, as well as two 16’x20′ heated cabins. The latter could be used as additional living space or for guest houses.
